Well, this track provided quite a bit of a mystery to the many elves who work here at FaLaLaLaLa.

Over the past few years, we’ve gotten a lot of requests for help in finding certain songs that people remember from their youths.  Some are easy.  Others are obscure and take quite a bit of sleuthing.  This is especially true of older releases, especially ones that predate the LP era.  This is one of those.

Last year, a woman named Adreinne posted a request in the FaLaLaLaLa forums (where there’s a lot more action than you see here on the blog).  She was looking for a song with the following lyrics:

Little boys, little girls don’t delay,
This is your Merry Christmas day.
Come along, join the family,
and gather around, all around the Christmas tree.

Jingle bells, jingle bells, cling, clang, cling.
Plum puddin’, toys and everything.
Old Saint Nick may be there for tea,
So gather around, all around the Christmas tree.

Mother, Dad and brother Bill,
Cousin Jack and Uncle Will,
Grandma and your Grandpa, too,
Awaiting around the Christmas tree for you.

1st time:
Little boys, little girls, hand in hand,
Hop, skip and jump to fairyland.
Santa Claus comes but once a year,
He’s comin’ around the chimney, (instrumental: / / / / )
Comin’ right down the chimney, (instrumental: / / / / )
He’s comin’ around, all around the Christmas tree.

2nd time:
Little boys, little girls, hand in hand,
Hop, skip and jump to fairyland.
Santa Claus comes but once a year,
He’s comin’ around the chimney, (instrumental: / / / / )
Comin’ right down the chimney, (instrumental: / / / / )
He’s comin’ around, he’s comin’ around,
All around the Christmas tree.
Ding! Dong!

The initial thought (provided by Christmas music guru Tim Neely) was that it was “All Around The Christmas Tree” by the legendary Raymond Scott.  This was a bit of a red herring, created by two extremely similar titles (the difference between All Around The Christmas Tree and All Around the Xmas Tree…).

Then, several weeks ago, our friend Subbysfears solved the mystery.  I’ll let him explain:

It is indeed All Around The Xmas Tree by Mark Warnow with Dick Todd on vocals.  “Klein-Stuart” are given the writing credits.  Label is Sonora (“Clear as a bell”) and the number is 3000.

I saw this old 78 listed on eBay–All Around The Xmas Tree.  Looked pretty beat up.  And I would’ve passed on it given Ernie’s review of the Raymond Scott clip.  But I noticed, in the eBay photo, the name Dick Todd next to Mark Warnow.  I remembered FL4adrienne saying “could be Bing Crosby” and that Dick Todd was sometimes referred to as Canada’s Bing Crosby.  So I took a shot.  Hell, the postage was way more than the record.  Anyway, it arrived and the lyrics match up.

The irony is that Mark Warnow happens to be the older brother of Raymond Scott.  How ’bout that?

So, thanks to the curiosity and resourcefulness of so many friends of FaLaLaLaLa, we can present to you All Around the Xmas Tree by Mark Warnow and Dick Todd. (Our apologies for the scratchy sound quality. That’s what you often get with these old 78s.)  Enjoy!
